Advent in Grassington

(viewed 202 times)
Grassington has been holding a Dickensian Christmas for 25 years now. It embodies most concepts of advent.
I chose this image because of the involvement - everyone together, but each an individual, joining in the age old tradition of carol singing, complete with torches to chase away the midwinter dark.

May you enjoy your Christmas in your own way. Savour its magic moments.

Chasing away the dark

(viewed 195 times)
Long before Christmas was celebrated we marked midwinter festivals such as Yule and the feast of Mithras by lighting fires and candles to chase away the dark. It's a fundamental part of us, raising our spirits at the darkest time of the year. So as you switch on the Christmas lights this year you'll be continuing a tradition that goes back many thousands of years. How cool is that?

Merry Christmas.

May warmth be around the corner for you

(viewed 216 times)
The solstice is almost upon us. Most of the northern hemisphere has already seen the earliest sunset, and soon the days will start becoming longer again. It's definitely time to gather and treasure those you love, and appreciate their presence in your life.

May the warmth of love and good cheer be within sight of all of you. Merry Christmas, and best of the season.

(I asked for today because Christmas was supposed to come a bit early in Antarctica, with the ship arriving at our base for the first time since we left in April. As it turns out, the ship has been delayed and won't arrive until Sunday. Oh well - best laid plans.)

Prepare the song...

(viewed 217 times)
Be merry all, be merry all.
With holly deck the festive hall.
Prepare the song, the feast, the hall
To welcome merry Christmas.

And all remember, gentles gay:
For you who bask in fortune's ray
The year is all a holiday.
The poor have only Christmas.

You who in velvet mantle go,
Defy December's tempest's roar.
Oh, spare one garment from your store
To clothe the poor at Christmas.

[chorus]

You who the costly banquet deal
To friends who never famine feel,
Oh, spare one morsel from your meal
To feed the poor at Christmas.

[chorus]

With blazing logs of fuel the while,
Your homes are within summer's smile.
Oh, spare one log from off your pile
To warm the poor at Christmas.

[chorus]

So shall each note of mirth appear
More sweet to Heaven than praise or prayer,
And angels in their carols there
Shall bless the poor at Christmas.

[chorus]

Hark! The herald angels sing

(viewed 266 times)
Christmas seems to have come even more quickly this year than usually. I didn't really have much time to think about Christmas and it's nearly there. Being busy was probably a good thing but it also reminded me that Christmas is a good time to slow down, enjoy little things: a smile, a light. even Christmas carols are not that annoying anymore in our home...when sung by Eclair. Happy Christmas to all mobloggers
